Artist Statement

In my practice I make work that is twofold; primarily my work utilises the joy that comes from communicating openly with other people in fact it centres around this idea, that of shared sociality. For some years now my works have been either illustration or performative/interactive pieces or decorated spaces containing sculptural pieces, in most cases usually featuring some kind of framework that allows sociality to occur or, as in the case of the illustrative works, a form of escapism for the viewer. Before beginning I consider what it is that kindles conversation and keeps it burning? How can I achieve this through my work? What does, what can escapism look like? My aim is to attempt to spark people’s imagination and wonder, and to normalise communication between people, have it go beyond the superficial and in some cases hopefully help strengthen not just my own but others’ interpersonal repertoire. I feel this is of extra importance today, as many are starting to have these skills dulled or disappear completely.

In-between these more social projects I make work that looks inward. The other half of my practice derives from, explores and unpacks my own inner thoughts and experiences helping me to reflect upon, understand and renew myself. This is done predominantly through the mediums of illustration, installation, and occasionally photography. This half of my practice is inspired by and created through the lens of fantasy/storytelling/mythology and nature, these often combine. The reasons for this being that these are some of the things I myself find I’m most connected to, and that allow me to express myself in the truest and most real authentic way. Additionally I feel the use and combination of fantasy/storytelling/mythology and nature allows for a vast range of paths and angles by which to reinterpret and utilise them in my practice. It’s also something I believe many people can relate to and access, as there are countless sources of fantasy, storytelling, and mythology across the globe, and nature is appreciated by so many already and can be encouraged in others quite easily I think. So, I feel that in order to keep myself grounded, and able to help nurture sociality in others, these secondary personal projects ought to continue in tandem.

As an artist, I believe that my work has the power to bring about positive change. I am committed to creating art that is accessible, engaging, and meaningful to a wide range of people, and that has the potential to improve their lives in tangible ways.

My practice is centred around the idea that art can be a powerful tool for healing, transformation, and personal growth. I aim to create works that are designed to help people overcome challenges, find meaning and purpose in their lives, and connect with others in a deep and meaningful way. This can be both passive and active. I work with a range of media, including illustration, sculpture, installation, sometimes including performance and photography. My art is informed by my own experiences of struggle and adversity, and I am deeply committed to creating works that are rooted in empathy, compassion, and a deep respect for the human experience. Through my practice, I hope to inspire others to use art as a tool for healing and transformation, and to recognise the transformative power of creativity in their own lives. Ultimately, I believe that art has the power to bring people together, to promote healing and understanding, and to help us all live more fulfilling and connected lives. What I want is to leave people with something lasting and meaningful that can be reflected upon, that is my main goal and what gives me the most satisfaction.

I feel it is of great importance to maintain ourselves as social creatures, to just keep talking, sometimes all that is needed is meaningful conversation with one another and the time and patience such an activity requires. I think most would be quite surprised by the numerous benefits of regular and genuine communication. A chance to relax, renew and revive oneself.
