In my practice I make work that is primarily concerned with myth & legend, nature, spirituality & magic, and storytelling - and the ways in which these themes can be utilised and manipulated to foster feelings of belonging, calm, and renewal. I seek to achieve this chiefly via the mediums of illustration, painting, sculpture, and installation. With aspirations of one day dipping my toes into the world of writing, perhaps. The materials used in my practice at present consist of; paper, pencil, pens, ink, watercolours & gouache, – wire armatures, expanding foam, papier-mâché clay, clay (from the earth), and cardboard. All things which are relatively inexpensive, readily available, and firmly familiar to me. As for my processes when making work; it begins with a spark of inspiration which often comes from a mixture of things I observe, experiences I have, and then grows organically from there into whatever any particular project requires, all through the impetus of my silly little brain.
Ultimately my hopes for what my work can achieve amounts to a strong desire to, as previously mentioned, bring about in others joy, a sense of calm, humour perhaps, but above all else I seek to provide shelter for the spirit, body, and mind. To uplift others, not cancel them out. The words I often like to use when describing my practice are; relax, renew, revive.
I believe it is these things that make my work, whilst not wholly unique, certainly relatively unique and definitely of importance. In the interest of brevity, we live in an often cruel and fast paced world, and I therefore think that any opportunity I have to give others a sense of refuge and care through the work I make, is worthwhile. These are the reasons why I make what I make, it brings me great joy being able to help others in any way in which I can, be that in simple fleeting ways or indeed more involved ways. That to me is just one example of the purpose of art, it’s certainly the purpose of mine.
